An absolutely uplifting play about depression, Duncan Macmillan’s “Every Brilliant Thing” shows at Willits Community Theatre Feb. 14 through March 2.
For its positivity, humor, audience participation and overall genius script, the play has become a global phenomenon and modern classic since its debut 10 years ago in Edinburgh. Starring in the WCT production is our local theater prodigy Billy Hetherington.
In response to his mother’s suicide attempt, a young boy has made a list of all the things great worth living for – like water-fights, ice-cream, peeing in the ocean, and laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. As he gets older the list has kept growing
The magic lies in the way the audience members are invited to participate in sharing the list. Five members are assigned lines as they enter the theatre and others are invited down onto the stage for roles in the story. Almost everyone contributes and a community is created.
Hetherington says at its core the play presents an immersive experience, blending comedy, improv and the ever-changing audience interaction at each new show. “We hope the play inspires others to look at our world through the gaze of positivity.”
Director Sara France echoes the sentiment that the play through its correlations to suicide and depression has the potential to be a really valuable experience for coping with those issues. She says, “I imagine people leaving the theater feeling a little lighter and more hopeful.”
“Every Brilliant Thing” runs Feb. 14 through March 2, with shows on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available online at: www.wctperformingartscenter.org or at the door.
The WCT playhouse is located at 37 W. Van Lane in Willits. Season Sponsors for WCT are NC Financial Group, Community Foundation of Mendocino County, KZYX Radio, KLLG Radio, Jerry Drew Painting, Greg and Tanya Musgrave, and Sparetime Garden Supply.
