Even though February is already here, board members of Art Center Ukiah feel that one month into the New Year is not too late to think about the concept of “Starting Anew.”
Ink and pigment painting by William Shi (Contributed)Board President Marilynn Zensen points out, “Spring is just ahead with new growth sprouting and the awakening promise of the year to come. And Lunar New Year is on January 29… really late this year… so the month of February will be filled with celebrations around the Year of the Snake.” And, as board member Susan Blackwelder reminds us, “New Year’s resolutions are still fresh in our minds… some people haven’t even finished making them!”
Another important aspect of the “Starting Anew” theme is that our country has begun the next four-year cycle with a new President and a changed Congress. That will definitely be inspiration for a variety of artistic responses on the theme.
Artists were challenged to address the thought “What’s new for you in 2025? Do you start anew with a promise, a reaction, a dream or something tangible?
William Shi, a student at the Dharma Realm Buddhist University Boys School, responded with a pair of ink and pigment paintings on rice paper. William explains, “The calligraphy on the top left corner of each piece writes Chinese idioms about the theme of starting anew, but a translation to English might be a little weird.” Though the writing will be enigmatic for most viewers, the beauty of the pieces will be inspirational for the new year.
Ceramic cantaloupe by Susan Blackwelder (Contributed)A more “down to earth” response to the theme is a ceramic cantaloupe by Susan Blackwelder. The top of the melon is cut off, revealing a center brimming with the seeds of a new harvest yet to come. Another plant lover, Darrell Carpenter, is looking forward to the new growth and new beginnings of spring. “I’m a gardener in the middle of winter,” Darrell says, “and I’m looking at seed catalogues right now. I’m so looking forward to planting… that’s all I can think about.”
The First Friday opening reception for this show will be on Feb. 7 from 5-8 p.m. Live harp music will presented throughout the evening by Suni Smith. Art Center Ukiah is located in the rear of the Corner Gallery at 201 S. State St. in Ukiah.
