Walmart promises ‘closer look’ after self-checkout user ‘forced’ to pack items on floor before facing last store hurdle

A WALMART self-checkout user struggled to hide her dismay after having no option but to pack her items on the floor.

The customer revealed she had a full cart of groceries but seemed to struggle with the lack of space on offer.

In an X post, Jen lamented how she seemed to run out of room in the packing area.

“I put them on the floor,” she bemoaned.

But, her in-store woe didn’t stop at the checkout.

She then despaired at the quality of the bags, which “ripped” – presumably because they were full with items.

Jen tried to walk out of the Walmart store, but a worker wearing asset protection gear stopped her in her tracks.

Greeters will sometimes ask to see proof of a shopper’s receipt – even after completing their purchases.

This is not a policy applied across all Walmart stores, but the measure has proved controversial.

Jen summed up her reactions with an angry-faced emoji.

A Walmart spokesperson swiftly responded to the shopper’s complaint.

“Jen, let’s take a closer look at the issue,” they said.

“Would you mind sending a DM, so we can gather some details?”

Jen is not the only shopper who has blasted the state of supermarket self-checkouts.

The U.S. Sun reported how one Kroger shopper described her ordeal as “horrible.”

She told how she left approximately $200 worth of groceries on the conveyor belt in frustration.

She decided to abandon her cart after waiting 10 minutes and no assistance arrived.

Grocery chains attracted considerable criticism, particularly during the holidays.

    Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

Another Kroger shopper told how he used the floor to pack his items.

The customer was forced into taking desperate action because of how compact the packing area was.

Kroger apologized for the checkout mishap, but the shopper described the ordeal as “unacceptable.”

Retailers have resorted to imposing restrictions to ensure self-service remains an efficient checkout method.

Target shoppers have been warned that only a maximum of 10 items can be scanned at self-service machines.

But, the policy has sparked so much fury that some shoppers have threatened to boycott the chain.

And similar restrictions have been rolled out in Schnucks and some Walmart outlets.

Schnucks shoppers can only scan a maximum of 15 items at self-checkout.
