USPS customers are fuming after being slapped with late fees on bills caused by missed mail deliveries.
Residents in parts of Glynn County, GA, are frustrated by the inconsistent service, with some going days without receiving any mail at all.
Bobby J Miller, a resident of Brunswick, even tried to find a solution by installing a brightly-coloured mailbox.
He hoped this would catch the attention of delivery services.
But – despite his best efforts – Bobby has still faced issues with late bill deliveries resulting in penalty fees.
He told News4JAX: “Well, see we’re on a low income and we have to do what we can to pay.
“And then after that right there we have to pay more, it’s going to hurt us with buying food, gas, and stuff like that.”
Bobby said he is going to pay his bills in person from now on, to avoid further fees.
John Adams, another Brunswick resident, reported similar experiences of unacceptable USPS service.
He said: “My mail would come every day at 11 o’clock – every day you can count on it.
“But now it’s getting way-off.”
In response to these complaints, Georgia Representative Buddy Carter, along with other lawmakers, sent a letter to the postmaster.
The letter demanded to know what percentage of incoming mail was delivered on time.
It also asked about what challenges faced by USPS employees might be causing the unreliable service.
During a Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee meeting last month, Sentator Jon Ossoff raised concerns about the USPS reliability, whilst the postal service defended its operations.
One person thought they knew what the root of the problem is.
They explained: “Most of the late delivery issues are because of prioritizing package delivery over mail delivery.”
Another person agreed with this analysis of the problem, saying: “I was told by a local mail carrier that they are being told whether to deliver mail that day, or skip the mail and deliver [packages] only that day.
“Days upon days of skipping mail boxes.”
Another chimed in with a different theory, claiming: “The post office union is to blame.”
