The never-ending trade saga with the Vancouver Canucks has come to an end with the team agreeing to deal J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Centre Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini and a conditional first-round pick will go from the Rangers to the Canucks in the trade, according to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan. Defencemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom will go with Miller to New York.
The Canucks decided to move the 31-year-old Miller amid off-ice drama and sub-standard on-ice production.
This comes as the beginning of the end to a month-long narrative between Miller and Elias Pettersson, during which the rumoured rift between the Canucks’ top two centremen has been affecting the team, both on-ice and off.
Friedman had previously reported that all solutions were on the table, including trading one, both or neither.
Miller hit career-highs in goals (37) and points (103) last season to lead the Canucks to a Pacific Division title but the East Palestine, Ohio, native has suffered a turbulent 2024-25. Miller had 16 points in the first 17 games of the season (six goals, 11 assists) before taking a 10-game leave of absence for personal reasons.
After his return, he went pointless for five games, but eventually broke through for points in five of Vancouver’s last six contests.
On the season, he has nine goals, 35 points and a minus-4 rating.
Miller began his career with the Rangers and played six seasons in New York before being traded to Tampa Bay in 2018. Miller is in the second year of a seven-year, $56 million contract and had to waive his no-trade clause to allow this deal to be completed.
