A pause in monthly mortgage payments for those experiencing financial hardship. Protections for tenants opening their doors to wildfire victims and their pets. More wages for the incarcerated people fighting fires.
These are just some of the ideas proposed by California legislators in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophic fires that tore through the Los Angeles area at the start of 2025.
These — and other bills — are in addition to the $2.5 billion in disaster aid legislators and Gov. Gavin Newsom already approved, funding that was fast-tracked and could be, partially or fully, recouped by the federal government.
Track here the dozen-plus bills proposed by the California Legislature, meant to provide relief to victims, accelerate recovery efforts, shore up the state’s infrastructure in the event of future fires and more.
We’ll follow the bills through the legislative process, keep tabs on the fiscal impact and bring you additional coverage of what the bills do. And keep checking back; we’ll continue to update this tracker as more work is done on wildfire-related legislation in Sacramento this year.
