This is a fun one. Per Patrick Mooney at The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs are finalizing an agreement to bring back lefty Brandon Hughes on a minor league deal.
Hughes, now 29, was a rocket ship of a relief prospect after the pandemic (and a full-time conversion to pitching), dominating his way through the minors and reaching the big leagues in 2022. He pitched his way to a 3.12 ERA that season with the Cubs over 57.2 innings, and looked like he was emerging as a back-end option heading into 2023.
Unfortunately, Hughes’ knee had other ideas, hampering him throughout the year, and ultimately leading to the Cubs letting him go after the season. Hughes signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks and mostly pitched quite well at Triple-A for them on the season. He only got a few stretches back up in MLB with the Diamondbacks, and they did not go well (8.15 ERA over 17.2 innings). Even at Triple-A, the peripherals aren’t quite what they were before the knee injury. So, it’s fair to wonder whether the strikeouts can come back or if he can be an effective contact-manager at the big league level.
But on a minor league deal? With Hughes returning to the organization that developed him? Giving the Cubs another lefty depth option? Yes, yes, yes. This is a good, no-risk idea.
