User Experience
Out of the box, the G-Drive Project is ready to work. It features plug-and-play functionality and there is no special software to download in order to work with it. The device itself is quite large. I’m used to working with SSD-based external drives and this one is HDD-based. That means you will hear the mechanical parts working when the drive is completing its read/write functions. It’s not loud by any means, but it does make more noise than an SSD. The case of the G-Drive Project is designed to be hefty and protective. It is a powered hard drive enclosure so you will need access to a power source as well as a Thunderbolt port on your computer.
I always put a digital storage device to the test by running it through three different performance evaluations.

I didn’t worry about reformatting the drive since APFS would work fine for my purposes. These tests provide a well-rounded view of a storage device’s speed, efficiency, and real-world usability across different scenarios. I believe the G-Drive Project was able to achieve its top possible transfer speeds since I had it plugged directly into my MacBook Pro. The specs state it should have a read/write speed of 260 MB/s and these tests proved that it can.
Blackmagic Disk Speed Test: This benchmark is widely used by creative professionals to measure read and write speeds for video editing workflows. It simulates real-world file transfers, particularly for 4K and 8K video formats, helping determine whether a drive can handle high-bitrate content efficiently.
I ran this test twice — once as a 1 GB stress test and the second time with a 5 GB stress test. These results were very similar. Both testing scenarios returned read/write speeds exceeding the reported specs.

Drag-n-Drop Test: A practical, real-world test where I manually transfer a large folder of mixed file types and sizes to and from the drive while timing the process. This gives a direct sense of how fast the drive performs under actual usage conditions, rather than just relying on synthetic benchmarks.
Using a stopwatch, I time how long it takes to copy a specific file or folder to the hard drive. Then, I calculate the transfer rate by dividing the file size by the elapsed time. The file I transferred to the G-Drive Project was 20.7 GB in size and contained a variety of file types including images and video. The transfer took 78.24 seconds. That calculates to a transfer rate of approximately 271.75 MB/s.
