Thoughts are with everyone affected by the airline and helicopter crash in DC. Sad and scary, and I hope the families can someday find peace. Just a terrible tragedy.
You hate to transition into baseball stuff, but that’s the job …
“He made a ton of contact, with just a 20 percent whiff rate and 15.3 percent strikeout rate despite being very young for the level, and needs now to work on the swing decisions to make sure he’s attacking pitches where he can do real damage.
His exit velocities jumped significantly last year and he was very unlucky on balls in play, with just a .274 BABIP, pointing to some real upside at the plate.”
Rojas’s slash line (.245/.310/.336/88 wRC+) simply did not capture what he was actually doing at the plate: not striking out, taking walks, hitting the ball hard in the air, and hitting a ton of line drives. Other than the results, he was doing everything you would hope to see from a 19-year-old playing at High-A. Personally, I remain as high on Rojas as I’ve ever been, and I think we see a big offensive year in 2025. That said, why did Law not have a guy like that on his top-100? Well, he is of the opinion that Rojas very likely cannot stick at shortstop: “[Rojas showed] questionable enough defense at shortstop that it seems very likely he’s going to end up somewhere else, perhaps even a corner outfield spot …. He’s erratic in the field now, with a lot of unforced mistakes and questions about his internal clock, and other teams seem to believe he’s just not a shortstop regardless of how his body develops.” Those are not necessarily concerns you hear from everyone, but if it were true that Rojas projected at a corner outfield spot down the road, then he’d be way off my top-100-type lists, too. I won’t proclaim to be a scout, but what I’ve seen of Rojas at shortstop has always looked playable. So he’s still a shortstop for me, until he shows that he’s not. — Kohl Franklin (@kohlrf) January 29, 2025 Franklin, 25, had non-Tommy John elbow surgery back in May, so he could have something like a normal schedule this year in the ramp-up. Currently looks like it. That could have us once again dreaming on his upside by the time the season opens. Franklin has the projectability and pitch characteristics of a quality big league starter, but he hasn’t been able to sync up both the health and the control for longer than a few starts at a time. Keep an eye on him, though. If he’s healthy and if he takes one more step forward, he would instantly be on the radar as a possible big league contributor in 2025, even if out of the bullpen initially.MORE FROM BLEACHER NATION: Check Out BN Fantasy | Subscribe to The BN Newsletter
