UPD: Lake County man arrested with ‘hundreds of stolen checks’

A Lake County man arrested in Ukiah on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition also reportedly had “hundreds of stolen and forged checks” in his vehicle, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

According to the UPD, an officer in the 1200 block of Airport Park Boulevard approached a Dodge pickup truck with expired registration tags around 11:45 p.m. Jan. 25.

The officer describes the man in the pickup as initially asleep, then once awake “immediately began acting suspiciously, including reaching around inside the vehicle and denying that he was on any probation.”

The person was identified as Greg D. Burnett, 54, of Lake County, who reportedly had “an active felony warrant for his arrest out of Lake County, (and) was on active Formal Probation out of Lake County for a previous violation of 422(a) PC-Criminal Threats.”

When officers searched the vehicle after taking Burnett into custody, they reported finding “in between the driver’s seat and the center console, directly where Burnett had tried to reach, a Colt Cobra .38 Special revolver. A further search of the vehicle yielded a baggie of methamphetamine, and hundreds of stolen and forged checks.”

Burnett was then booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm and a controlled substance, illegally possessing both a firearm and ammunition, concealing an unregistered firearm and for the felony arrest warrant. The UPD notes that it will “conduct further investigation regarding the stolen checks.”
