Ryne Stanek Reportedly Re-Signing with the Mets

To the extent the Chicago Cubs had hoped to pair a Ryne Stanek signing with the Ryan Pressly addition, they’ll have to look elsewhere. Stanek is headed back to the Mets.

Anthony DiComo reports on X that the Mets will re-sign Stanek to a one-year deal. The 33-year-old power righty joined the Mets at midseason in 2024 after a mixed first half with the Mariners. He actually struggled by the results with the Mets (6.06 ERA), but his strikeout rate popped to 33.3%, and it was a sample of just 16.1 innings (almost all of the damage came in just two outings). Clearly the Mets – along with other reportedly interested teams like the Cubs – see him bouncing back in 2025 on the strength of his stuff. Prior to 2024, Stanek was a long-time reliever for the Astros and Rays, and a very successful one at that.

The Cubs have been connected to a slew of other relief names this offseason, and the most recent pair included Stanek and old friend David Robertson. It’s not clear whether the Cubs can fit Robertson into the budget after the Pressly addition, but then again, the Cubs got the Astros to eat a whole lot of Pressly’s salary to make that deal happen (he’ll get just $8.5 million from the Cubs).
