CVS exec admits people ‘really dislike’ in-store hurdle – and confirms only select shoppers to benefit from new measure

A CVS executive has admitted that one of the store’s policies to combat theft has not been welcomed among all shoppers.

Bosses at the drugstore chain have resorted to locking items away in cabinets.

CVS is not alone in implementing the measure as locked cabinets are a feature in Walmart, Walgreens and Target stores.

And, the measure has not been appreciated by all shoppers.

Tilak Mandadi, the executive vice president of ventures at CVS Health and its chief digital, data, analytics and technology officer, admitted the anti-theft tool had proved unpopular.

“People really, really dislike locked cabinets,” he told the Wall Street Journal.

Bosses have taken customers’ fury on board and have developed a new tool that gives customers more autonomy.

Currently, shoppers have to wait for a staffer to retrieve a product.

But, a feature on the app could give shoppers the power to unlock cases.

However, only customers who are part of CVS’s loyalty program can take advantage of the benefit.

To use the feature, shoppers must be connected to the in-store WiFi and have their Bluetooth switched on.

So far, the app feature is being tested at three stores.

Mandadi revealed it will be rolled out across 10 to 15 stores.

Bosses have confirmed they hope all CVS loyalty program subscribers will be able to use the feature.

Mandadi is not the only exec who has echoed concerns about locking items away.

Brian Cornell, the CEO of Target, said he hopes that at some point bosses will be able to get rid of the cabinets.

Cornell raised eyebrows in 2023 when he claimed people thanked him for locking items away.

He claimed people are appreciative that they can pick up their favorite items, per CNBC.

Anti-theft measures rolled out by retailers

Retailers across the US and Canada have rolled out strategies designed to combat theft. The U.S. Sun has compiled a list of measures that have been implemented at stores.

And, the CEO of Walgreens, Timothy Wentworth, also admitted the anti-theft measure had backfired.

“When you lock things up, you don’t sell as many of them,” he admitted in an earnings call as reported by USA Today.

He described the fight to combat theft as a “hand-to-hand combat battle.”

Walgreens bosses are in the process of closing a raft of stores, including 12 in the crime-plagued city of San Francisco.

Shoppers have been left bewildered when clothing items were put under lock and key at certain Walmart stores.

Locking items away is just one example of an anti-theft method.

Security tags, cameras, and self-checkout technology are some of the other methods retailers have turned to.

Receipt checks are also another tool used by retailers.

But, the inspections, carried out at certain Walmart stores, have irked customers.
