San Diego Unified School District has revamped its approach to handling reports of sexual harassment, civil rights violations and safety concerns through its new Office of Investigations, Compliance and Accountability, it was announced Tuesday.
The ICA serves as a central hub for students, parents and employees to report concerns, ensuring all complaints are documented and addressed per district policies.
“We are making it easier for our staff and students to report incidents with a new online reporting tool that previously did not exist,” said Farshad Talebi, Esq., Executive Director, Office of Investigations, Compliance and Accountability, at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night. “Our Title IX Officer now has the support of an expert team that promptly evaluates, investigates and sees each case through until there is an outcome and resolution.”
Since 2023, the district has received more than 3,500 reports through its online Ethicspoint Reporting System, with each case assigned to an investigative specialist, officials said.
The ICA has also implemented specialized systems to address Title IX, bullying and harassment, and uniform complaint reporting to ensure proper oversight and accountability.
“The changes we have made are helping us to build trust amongst parents, students and staff,” Talebi said. “We take privacy and confidentiality very seriously. People now feel safe, and better supported in speaking up when they feel misconduct has occurred.”
Officials said if an incident occurs, it should be reported immediately through various methods including:
