Loveland man detained by ICE, federal agents Tuesday morning

A Loveland man was arrested by federal agents, including Immigration Customs and Enforcement, in Loveland Tuesday morning, according to the man’s daughter who spoke to the Reporter-Herald Tuesday night. A portion of the incident was caught on camera by a Loveland resident who went out to film what was happening when she heard about it online.

“We are really worried about him,” said 19-year-old Lizbeth Acevedo, the man’s daughter. “We are worried sick to wonder where he is at, what is the next step, what is going to happen.”

Acevedo said her dad was detained by agents after he and his wife were pulled over in front of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car on East Eisenhower Boulevard while driving to a court hearing Tuesday morning, adding that the family believes one of the agent vehicles was outside of their Loveland residence since early in the morning. She said officers demanded he exit the vehicle, which he did not initially do as he asked for information and requested to see if they had a warrant; Acevedo added that, throughout this, several family members showed up on scene to inquire about what was happening.

She claims that officers threatened to break in a window of the vehicle if he did not comply, adding they did eventually break a window. She said he got out of the vehicle after this and was taken into custody. Acevedo added that they have not heard from him since and do not know where he is being held.

“We are devastated because that is our only parent that we rely on,” she said, explaining he is a single father to her and her two siblings. “Now we just have to figure out life on our own without him being here.”

She declined to provide her father’s name or what the court case he was going to entailed.

Jillian Peterson, a Loveland resident, posted the one-minute-long video to Facebook  on Tuesday afternoon, showing several vehicles parked in front of the Enterprise. She said she initially heard about the incident from another video posted on Facebook that was later removed.

“I stopped making coffee .. and in my pajamas I jumped in my car and I wanted to, if nothing else, bear witness to the moment,” she said.

In the video, several officers can be seen outside of the building standing around several large Ford SUVs with flashing lights. As Peterson drives past the officers, several people can be seen standing nearby shouting words in Spanish, including one who can be heard yelling “papa.”

Peterson told the Reporter-Herald that none of the vehicles had clear markings they were law enforcement, but several of the officers wore patches that said ICE.

Peterson, whose family is Latino, said the event had her shaken up.

“It was honestly the first time in my life I have ever, as an American citizen, felt powerless. And that was terrifying,” she said. “I have never not felt that my rights were not of some sort of power.”

A representative from the Loveland Enterprise was unable to comment on the incident but did note that the operation had nothing to do with the business itself.

Steve Kotecki, a public information officer with ICE, said he was unable to confirm if any ICE activity occurred in Loveland Tuesday.

The Colorado Rapid Response Network — a statewide group committed to “responding to raids, deportation and any … (ICE) activity happening across the state in our communities, according to its website — posted on its Facebook page at around 1 p.m. Tuesday that the incident in front of Enterprise was ICE activity. did note, though, that the network did not have someone to confirm this sent to the site in time, but added that  the group believes the video confirms that it is ICE activity.

Heart and Sol, the Loveland nonprofit aimed at promoting cultural diversity in Loveland, posted on its Facebook several hours later that “in light of today’s noted local activity” the group wanted to share information regarding people’s rights. This included information on preparing and defending oneself or coworkers as well as suggested tips on how to record or report incidents like this.

also pointed concern toward a proposed Mississippi bill that, according to the Heart and Sol post, would make it a felony to be in the country undocumented with a proposed life sentence for those arrested.

“This is no joke and we are not exaggerating the severity of what is taking place or even the possibilities of what may come,” the post read, adding “Take this seriously.”
