The Greeley-Evans School District 6 Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to ensure all students can safely access free, public education regardless of immigration status.
Since 1982, federal law has allowed all children, regardless of immigration status, to enroll in public school, according to the resolution read at Monday night’s board meeting. The district shared it supports student safety and well-being “regardless of their disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, national origin, religion, veteran status, ancestry immigration status or need for special education services.”
Recently, the federal government announced plans for immigration enforcement across the nation, the resolution said. The district recognizes the “confusion and anxiety” this has created in the school community among district families, students and staff members who now feel “insecure and unsafe” when it comes to accessing public education through the district.
District 6 will follow all state and federal laws to protect students and their families by taking the following actions:
Under federal law, the district will continue its enrollment and registration practices of not collecting or maintaining information on the immigration status of students or guardians The district will work with families to ensure emergency contacts remain up to date, provide resources to families who feel they need to make emergency plans and deliver support to students who believe their families are a risk School employees should forward federal immigration officials’ requests for entry into any school or district property, for communication with a student who’s under the supervision of the district during activities or transportation or for any information about students and their families to District 6’s Office of Legal Counsel. To read the full resolution, go to bit.ly/3EgcGQ7.
