Ethan Hawke is celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of his most memorable films.
“This time 30 years ago our movie Before Sunrise debuted at Sundance,” Hawke, 54, wrote via Instagram on Monday, January 27, in celebration of the 1995 film’s 30th anniversary. “Redford himself introduced it. Great night.”
Hawke also shared a series of photos from the film and of its Sundance premiere.

Thirty years ago, Hawke starred alongside Julie Delpy as Jesse Wallace, a young man from Texas who meets Céline (Delpy) on a train from Budapest to Vienna. The pair end up disembarking together and spending the entire night walking the city, where they played arcade games, encountered a poet, and fell into a version of love. The film was introduced by Sundance Film Festival founder Robert Redford at its debut.

The movie spawned two sequels, the aptly titled Before Sunset and Before Midnight, and a legion of devoted fans. As reported by Slate, the movie was inspired by a woman that writer-director Richard Linklater met in a toy shop in Philadelphia — like Jesse and Céline, the pair also spent the entire night walking the city.
Delpy, 55, and Hawke co-wrote the film — a previously unknown fact about the movie the actress revealed in a 2016 interview with Creative Screenwriting. “It was just a lot of talking, rather than romance,” Delpty said at the time, referring to the pair’s first draft of the film.“Richard hired us because he knew we were writing and he wanted us to bring that romance to the film.”
Delply added that those “romantic ideas” is what made it possible for her to write “something that actually got made without really getting credit for it.”

Linklater’s official co-writer Kim Krizan disputed Delpy’s claim three years later in an interview with Illeana Douglas. Delpy and Hawke were credited writers on both Sunset and Midnight.
Despite the confusion over writing credits, Before Sunrise is the type of movie that tugs on the heartstrings of anyone who believes in fate over circumstance, love at first sight and the magic that can crackle between two people who were meant to be — if only for a moment in time.

“I can’t look at Before Sunrise now without remembering, so vividly, that time period. Who I was then is so different from who I am now; it’s difficult for me to watch it and exorcise it from my actual life,” Hawke said of the film in a 2022 interview with The Independent. The actor later divorced his first wife, Uma Thurman, between the second and third films in the series, and Linklater encouraged him to bring his own divorce into the back-and-forth between Jesse and Céline in Midnight.
“It was really nerve-wracking to do,” Hawke added. “It was scary. Rick was really interested in blurring the line between character and actor in order to give the film a subconscious. We put a lot of ourselves into those movies.”
