Ho Chi Minh to start $9bn tourist city in April

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, have approved a $9bn extension to the city based on marine tourism in Can Gio, the city’s only coastal district, website The Investor reports.

The 28 sq km development is intended to be a hub for tourism and high-tech services.

Work starts in April and, by 2030, it hopes to have a permanent population of 230,000, and to be attracting 9 million visitors a year.

Can Gio Tourist City Corporation, a subsidiary of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, is the developer.

It will have a luxury resort with 458ha of canals and greenery, based on the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve.

Also planned are residential and tourism areas, and a 318ha commercial centre.

The district is part of Ho Chi Minh City’s 2021-30 masterplan, which aims to preserve the natural environment despite the development of the tourist industry, logistics and renewable energy.

Ho Chi Minh City is also advancing the $6bn Can Gio international transit port project.

This will provide facilities for transferring cargo between container ships and smaller “feeders”. It is expected to reach a capacity of 16.9 million containers by 2045.
