Two CMPD officers injured, suspect at large in East Independence Blvd hit-and-run investigation: CMPD

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Detectives with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a hit-and-run in east Charlotte after two officers were injured while redirecting traffic, officials say.

Around 5:23 a.m., officials say several officers were blocking E. Independence Blvd near Bojangles Coliseum due to a burst water pipe with their blue lights flashing. As they were redirecting traffic off the road, a 2015 Honda Civic collided with the rear of a marked CMPD vehicle. One officer was inside the SUV and another was standing next to the vehicle when it was struck. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

The Honda became disabled from the crash. Two of its four occupants fled the scene on foot. Officers were able to locate one of these subjects shortly afterward. The second subject who ran is still outstanding.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash.

    E. Independence Blvd.'s outbound lanes have reopened, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
