Here's when the new Grocery Outlet will open in SF's North Beach neighborhoodPolice allege Zheng was behind the wheel of the speeding Tesla Sunday evening when the crash occurred at Sixth and Harrison streets in SF's SoMa neighborhood. The crash, which also involved a driverless Waymo robotaxi, left one man and a dog dead and two others with life-threatening injuries.
The victim in the crash was identified Wednesday as 27-year-old Mikhael Romanenko of San Francisco.
Prior to the crash, there were also multiple hit-and-run collisions nearby on Interstate 280. Investigators are working to determine if there is a connection.
According to Supervisor Matt Dorsey, who represents District 6 where the crash took place, the city has already been planning to take necessary steps to reduce speeding in the area.
"We have recognized over the years this area is a problem. No one should be speeding at 100 miles an hour," Dorsey said. "So, we are putting up speed capturing cams."
The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency said they are in the process of installing pedestrian speed bulb-outs at intersections as well as accessible pedestrian signals and adding traffic signals.
"Something needs to be done to ensure this doesn't happen again," said Julia Romanenko, the mother of the victim.
Officials say the new speed cameras will be put in place around the city in the coming months. Proposed speed camera locations include on Harrison between Fourth and Fifth streets and several other nearby locations.
Zheng, according to the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, was released from custody on Wednesday.
