A Ukiah man was arrested after allegedly threatening officers while wielding a machete and not stopping his advances until being Tased multiple times, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
According to the UPD, officers responded to Cindee Drive around 10:30 p.m. Jan. 17 for a report of a disturbance involving someone violating a restraining order. The UPD describes the suspect in the incident – identified as Javier Ramirez, 33, of Ukiah – as being known to “be prohibited from being at the residence or contacting the victim (and for being) on probation out of Mendocino County for previous violations of the same restraining order.”
When officers arrived at the residence, they reported that “Ramirez emerged from behind a vehicle parked on the street and was wielding a machete in his right hand.” When officers drew their weapons and told the suspect to drop his, he reportedly “began yelling at the officer to shoot him while pacing around with the machete in a threatening position.”
While officers tried to calm Ramirez, they report that he “made several approaches towards the officers and brought the machete above his waistline. As negotiations continued, several officers moved close enough to deploy their Taser energy weapons, with the intention of disarming Ramirez without any injury to him or the officers. After multiple Taser deployments, the energy weapon achieved neuromuscular incapacitation (NMI), and Ramirez fell to the ground and dropped the machete.”
However, when officers moved closer to the suspect, they report that “Ramirez was able to grab the machete and again presented it towards the approaching officers. Additional Taser probes were deployed, and NMI was once again achieved, providing the officers with an opportunity to kick the machete out of Ramirez’s hand and secure him in handcuffs.”
The UPD reports that “Ramirez was unharmed during the incident and was subsequently forthcoming about his intentions to die at the hands of law enforcement. After being evaluated by medical personnel Ramirez was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest by force or threat, violating his probation and violating a restraining order. He was held under $50,000 bail.
