Ukiah Unified School Desk: Every day matters

By Deb Kubin, Superintendent

I am thrilled to share some exciting news about an initiative launching in our district: the Every Day Matters attendance campaign! This district-wide effort celebrates and rewards students with exceptional, improved, and perfect attendance while emphasizing the critical role attendance plays in student success. We know that students can’t learn and grow if they’re not present, and this campaign is designed to make every school day matter in a fun, engaging way.

Here’s how it works: schools across the district will compete for two coveted trophies — one for Best Attendance and one for Most Improved Attendance — which will be awarded during our Students of the Month ceremonies. These friendly competitions create excitement and encourage our students to show up every day.

But that’s not all! Within each school, grade levels are competing against one another for rewards and prizes determined by the school. Some of the prizes include new bikes, extra recess, name-brand electronics, pizza parties, scooters, and more. Whether big or small, these rewards highlight the importance of showing up every day and doing our best to build strong habits of attendance.

Why are we so focused on attendance? Because consistent attendance is the single biggest long-term indicator of success in school. Academics are only part of what students gain when they attend regularly.

They also develop crucial social-emotional skills, make friends, resolve conflicts, discover new interests, and build a sense of belonging in a supportive community. Missing school disrupts this process, and research shows that excessive absences can lead to patterns of withdrawal and a loss of confidence in students’ ability to keep up or fit in with their peers.

It’s easier to catch up on assignments than to rebuild a child’s confidence, and that’s why attendance matters so much. Parents, we need your help to ensure your child benefits fully from all that school offers. You play the most significant role in setting the tone for education. Here are a few tips to help:

Plan ahead. Schedule vacations during school breaks and wellness or dental appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.

    Set the tone

Encourage your child to power through minor discomforts like sniffles or headaches that don’t involve fever, vomiting or diarrhea. If they’re not contagious, they can attend.

    Know when to stay home

Students should stay home with a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours.

Use this competition to build excitement

What you’re excited about, your children get excited about, so cheer them on to help them win prizes for themselves and their classmates.

Our goal is a 95 percent attendance rate across the district, and I’m excited to share that we’re already close to achieving this in many of our schools. With a little extra effort and focus, we can reach this target together.

Thank you for supporting our students by making attendance a priority. Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Let’s make this campaign a success and celebrate our students who make every day matter!
