San Diego Unified School District officials on Wednesday said they will aim to protect students from immigration enforcement, despite actions by the Trump administration.

In a statement, Interim Superintendent Fabiola Bagula said:

“It’s unlikely the actions President Trump has taken so far will have a direct effect on our students. In December, our Board of Education reaffirmed its commitment to uphold a long-standing policy on our response to immigration enforcement. Our district is committed to ensuring everyone in our school communities feel safe, valued, and supported,” she said. “We have also made resources available and communicated regularly with parents and administrators. If anything other than our standard policies are required, we will take action.”

On Dec. 17, the district’s Board of Education passed a resolution intended to assuage fears over the new administration’s actions, specifically noting that “students are entitled to their First Amendment right to free speech,” but that harassment, discrimination, and biased-based harm have no place in San Diego Unified school communities.”

The resolution cited “existing and potential future increased threats posed to LGBTQIA+ (especially transgender), immigrant and all students, families and staff.”

The district launched a website to report possible “equity, civil rights or safety” concerns, with resources for immigrants and/or their children, LGBTQ, health and wellness and more
