Retired longtime Defeated Creek Community merchant, Mrs. Kathleen Woodard Gregory, ended her earthly journey at 1:06 p.m. at the age of 90 on Tuesday afternoon January 21, 2025 at the Knollwood Manor in Lafayette where she had been receiving therapy for a broken hip since December 9th.

Eld. Shawn Shepherd and Bro. Jackie Dillehay will officiate at the 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon January 23rd funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow beside her husband Bobby, in the Gazebo Garden at the Dixon Springs Cemetery.

    The Gregory family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Wednesday afternoon January 22nd from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Thursday from 12 noon until the 3 p.m. services.

    The only child of the late Cecil Lester (Teedlow) Woodard who died at the age of 41 on April 22, 1948 and Dortch Lena Gregory Woodard who died at the age of 69 on February 16, 1978, she was born Mary Kathleen Woodard in the Defeated Creek Community on July 20, 1934.

    Mrs. Gregory was a member of the 1952 graduating class at Smith County High School. She majored in home economics, was a member of the physical education club, the craft and record clubs.

    Mrs. Gregory was saved at the age of 15 and was baptized into the full fellowship of the Cornwells Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in the Defeated Creek Community, where she retained her membership at death.

    In Murfreesboro on April 9, 1960, she was united in marriage to Macon County farmer, Bobby Hugh Gregory. He preceded her in death on January 3, 2023 at the age of 90 following over sixty-two years of marriage.

    Mrs. Gregory’s father and uncle, the late Carl W. Woodard, were founders of the Woodard Brothers General Merchandise Store in the Defeated Creek Community on July 31, 1937, which is now owned and operated by Mrs. Kathleen’s son, Hughie Gregory.

    Surviving in addition to her son Hughie is his wife Tammy and they reside in the Defeated Creek Community; two grandchildren; a grandson, Daniel Gregory of the Difficult Community and a granddaughter, Kindra Gregory of South Carthage four great-grandchildren, LiliAnne & Kylan Gregory, Brooklynn and Austin Gregory.

    The Gregory family requests memorials to either the Cornwells Chapel Missionary Baptist Church or the Defeated Creek Fire Department.
