The Conrad Prebys Foundation, dedicated to supporting nonprofits that serve the San Diego community, has announced its list of grant recipients for 2025.

Among the honored organizations is the Ilan-Lael Foundation, a nonprofit committed to preserving and celebrating the artistic legacy of James Hubbell.

The Ilan-Lael Foundation has been awarded a $60,000 grant to fund its impactful art education program, The Harmony Project – Helping Arts Reach Marginalized Or Neighboring Youth, hosted at the Ilan-Lael studio, formerly known as the Hubbell Studio.

“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply grateful to receive this generous grant from The Conrad Prebys Foundation,” said Marianne Gerdes, the executive director of the Ilan-Lael Foundation. “This support allows us to expand our mission of bringing the transformative power of art to young people in rural and underserved communities. We’re excited to collaborate with the Julian School District and nearby communities that provide programs that foster community well-being while addressing the social and emotional needs of youth.”

Through The Harmony Project, the Ilan-Lael Foundation will bring consistent, art-based programming to marginalized youth in rural East San Diego County. The initiative is designed to combat isolation, address disparities and nurture social-emotional growth by fostering connection, inclusion and access to creative opportunities.

Key components of the program include:

    ·        Art workshops for Rural 4th graders: Engaging students in introspective tours and five-part art workshops at the Ilan-Lael studio.

    ·        Art mentorship and SEL programs: Providing social emotional learning and creative mentorship to isolated youth in surrounding communities.

    ·        Studio Art Classes. Offering art classesin stained glassfor local high school students at the Ilan Lael Studio.

“Our unique location in the backcountry gives us direct access to some of the county’s most underserved communities,” Gerdes said. “The population we aim to support includes those living in remote areas, such as two Indigenous reservations, first- and second-generation immigrant families, and families displaced by gentrification and economic hardship. These communities face significant challenges, with limited access to basic necessities like grocery stress, medical care and extracurricular activities which are often an hour and a half away. At Ilan-Lael, we hope that our organization’s approach to problem solving through creativity is seen as a core part of our culture that we are proud to share.”
