CFP exec director says ‘tweaks’ possible for 2025 season

The executive director of the College Football Playoff says “tweaks” for next year are possible, but did not promise any changes.

Executive director Rich Clark spoke to ESPN’s Heather Dinich following an annual meeting of commissioners, presidents and chancellors.

Any changes to the 12-team format used this past season would require unanimous approval of the FBS conference commissioners.

“I would say it’s possible, but I don’t know if it’s going to happen or not,” Clark said, per Dinich. “There’s probably some things that could happen in short order that might be tweaks to the 2025 season, but we haven’t determined that yet.”

Dinich shares that there was no push for an expansion to 14 teams at Sunday’s meeting. The ESPN insider also relays that seeding was not the subject of any”in-depth” conversation, but there were discussions about the conference champions receiving first-round byes.

Seeding and first-round byes have been a hot topic. Many fans and media members have questioned whether the 4 highest-ranked conference champions – Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, Arizona State – deserved first-round byes. The 4 conference champions all lost their CFP quarterfinal games.

Dinich, considered the media’s leading CFP insider, previously relayed that Group of 5 commissioners were unlikely to provide the unanimous approval to change first-round byes for conference champions.

There have been calls for CFP teams to be “re-seeded” after the opening round, potentially adjusting the bracket.
