A praise song for Chapel Hill Toffee, the Carolina blue box that begs to be opened, revealing the shiny plastic that contains — O wonder of wonders! — the delicacy of pecans and dark chocolate.
My children neither like pecans nor dark chocolate, yet I have to hide my birthday box of toffee to prevent them from devouring its entire contents without me. How can this be? Maybe it’s the buttery goodness that comes through on the first bite and lingers on the tongue. However, my kids don’t linger long before they crave another piece!
Maybe the secret is that it was originally a family recipe. According to the back of the box, the matriarch of the Graves family began the toffee tradition, and my kids know that mothers and grandmothers bake love into their goodies.
I know that Chapel Hill Toffee supports the Dina’s Dynasty Ovarian Cancer Fund, which was established after the death of yet another maternal family member. Ovarian cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose, meaning it often metastasizes elsewhere in the body. The fund aims to support research for effective screening as well as treatment through the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Let’s not sugarcoat the truth: cancer is hell. I know men, women, and children who have cancer, had cancer, and died from cancer. All of them insisted on hope, even in the face of incredible odds and misery. Hope is nourishment.
This is especially true if it is made with pecans, dark chocolate, and the secret ingredient — love.
