The Port of San Diego generated nearly $14 billion for the San Diego region during 2022-23, according to a study released Wednesday.
The economic impact report states that the $13.8 billion generated in the fiscal year that began July 1, 2022 and ended the following June 30, represented a 41% increase in the port’s impact from 2019.
The study examined the effects of particular sectors – maritime trade and cargo handling, industrial and wholesale business, cruise industry activities and tourism.
Among the findings in the report, prepared by transportation consulting firm Cambridge Systematics:
Visitors to hotels in the San Diego Bay waterfront area spent $2.6 billion. Direct spending by the cruise industry was more than $104 million. More than 2.4 million tons of cargo were shipped through the port, an amount that has increased by 12% since 2021.Port officials also say 71,000 jobs are supported by industries operating within the Port of San Diego, a 10% increase since 2019.
“The study’s findings underscore the port’s resilience through the pandemic and our incredible recovery in the face of global supply chain issues, inflation and other economic challenges,” Danielle Moore, chair of the Board of Port Commissioners, said in a statement.
The port manages lands that are home to cargo and cruise terminals, hotels and restaurants, marinas, museums and 22 public parks.
