A Mendocino Coast man was killed Tuesday after apparently falling off a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the MCSO, the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Portuguese Beach around 3:50 p.m. Jan. 14 when a citizen near Main Street in the town of Mendocino called 911 to report that there was a person on the beach who “was not moving, (and had possibly) fallen from the cliffs above.”
MCSO personnel, as well as Adventist Health Mendocino Coast Ambulance Paramedics, responded to the scene, where emergency responders located a man “on the beach below the steep cliff south of Kasten Street.” The man was later identified as Douglas C. Shapiro, a 65-year-old resident of Mendocino.
After the “Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department water-rescue team deployed a pair of their jet-skis (the MCSO explains that) Shapiro was transported via jet-ski from the beach to the north boat launch at Big River Beach in Mendocino (where) an off-duty Emergency Room Physician who happened to be near the boat launch immediately conducted an assessment of Shapiro.” However, Shapiro was pronounced deceased by that physician at 4:32 p.m. Jan. 14.
The MCSO deputies on-scene reportedly “observed injuries on the decedent consistent with a great fall, (determining that) foul play was not suspected.” A coroner’s investigation has been initiated, and “Shapiro’s cause and manner of death will be later determined by a Forensic Pathologist, (with the MCSO noting that) it can take multiple months to receive all associated reports to finalize the coroner’s investigation and determine the official manner and cause of death.”
