Head coaches at the AFCA convention in Charlotte have unanimously recommended a significant change to the transfer portal calendar, according to a report.

This would serve as the lone transfer window each year, meaning the elimination of the spring portal window. This would apply to all players except for graduate transfers.
However, the change is not official based on the AFCA vote. The proposal will now head to the Football Oversight Committee for approval.

Moving the transfer portal window to the beginning of January would allow for nearly the entire season to be 100% complete prior to the portal opening. All games except for the national championship would be played before the Jan. 12 deadline, if this proposal is approved.
It’s worth noting that approval by the Football Oversight Committee is not considered to be a formality. According to 247Sports’ Bud Elliott, coaches privately have had doubts about whether the change would be approved.
The Football Oversight Committee will meet later this year.
