That lion had been seen in the company of two others.
The incident prompted the closure “until further notice” of a playground and sports courts in the neighborhood, about half a mile from the community’s commercial center.
Sheriff Mike Fisher advised residents to keep their pets inside, the Mountain Messenger newspaper said, and he added, “I probably wouldn’t jog in that area right now, at least early morning and late evening.”
Downieville, on Highway 49 about 40 miles northwest of Truckee, made headlines as the site of California’s first documented fatal black bear attack on a person. Patrice Miller, 71, was killed in 2023 by a bear in her home.
Last May, another bear was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies after it tried to get into the Downieville school. That incident followed “escalating reports of bear break-ins,” the sheriff’s office said.
Mountain lions rarely attack people; California has recorded four fatal attacks in the past 50 years. The most recent was the killing last March of 21-year-old Taylen Brooks in El Dorado County.
