A man described as suicidal who allegedly threatened San Diego Police Department officers with a knife at an East Village luxury apartment complex was shot and killed by them, the department reported Tuesday.
Central Division officers responded to the Broadway Towers at 1150 E St. near Park Blvd. at approximately 6:54 p.m. Monday regarding a suicidal man, police said.
The suspect’s roommate told police dispatch he had returned home to find his roommate had attempted suicide with a knife.
After escorting six people out of the apartment, officers confronted the man inside the apartment and shot him. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.
The officers who shot the suspect have both been employed by the San Diego Police Department for 4 1/2 years and are assigned to patrol at the Central Division.
The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the discharge of a firearm by an officer. Per a countywide Memorandum of Understanding, members of the San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Unit were called to the scene to conduct the investigation.
