Discover the balance between simplicity and functionality with Croissant.
download from app storeAs a marketing professional, I’ve used many different types of social media cross-platform posting tools. For a number of years, I used Hootsuite and then I used Buffer for a while. Both tools have their plusses and minuses, but probably the biggest downside to those types of systems is the cost. Plus if you want to just focus on microposting without the expense of Buffer or Hootsuite, then Croissant is a great alternative.
About Croissant
Croissant was created to give users a user-friendly option for posting to multiple social media platforms at one time. It specifically focuses on microposting platforms that are alternatives to Twitter — Bluesky, Mastadon, and Threads. The app provides a distraction-free interface and allows people to post to their feeds without having to read through their feeds. The app is built using Swift with Swift UI as the framework. It was originally released in October 2024 with plans to release an iPad version and use Catalyst to carry the iPad version over to macOS (these versions were released in December 2024).
“Croissant saves you the labour of having to copy and paste a post you make on Threads, to the same thing on Mastodon and/or Bluesky. I feel like it hits a sweet spot: it’s genuinely useful, and is just plain nice.”
– Croissant developer, Aaron Vegh
Main Features
Support for Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads Support for threaded posts Image attachments and Alt Text (no alt text for Threads just yet, hopefully soon) Automatic drafts Custom App Icons Custom Tint colour Content Warnings (for Mastodon) Audience Options: control the viability or who can reply as supported by each network (still in progress)Created with independent users and small businesses in mind, Croissant strikes a balance between functionality and simplicity. It’s particularly well-suited for those who live online, small business owners, artists, and other professionals who need an intuitive yet robust tool to stay connected with diverse audiences.
Since its launch, Croissant has received feedback from users that states, “Users get to post what they want to say, without the obligation to also be reading their timeline, which can be a source of stress and anxiety. Small business professionals, such as authors, artists, or other small businesses who use social media for marketing, can readily pick up Croissant without moving to a more enterprise-y tool like Buffer.”
One of the main design inspirations for Croissant is Up Ahead, which has some nice interactions and animations. Some of the floating card elements were inspirations for Croissant’s menus and alerts. The biggest challenge that developers faced when creating Croissant was the integration of the different APIs that the app relies on to communicate with the different social media platforms.
“Croissant relies on the APIs provided by Meta (Threads), Mastodon and Bluesky. Integration of these very different services proved a real challenge, and all in different ways. Threads’ API is very new still, and documentation is pretty slight. They also have a very challenging approval process that took many attempts to overcome. Meanwhile, Mastodon is a wonderful API and I wish they were all so smooth to work with. As with any challenge in software development, these problems are overcome with the application of sufficient facial force against the unyielding brick wall.”
Should a user encounter any issues they can reach out via email, Discord, or GitHub Issues. Croissant has an option in the Settings menu to send an email that sends logs directly to a developer who replies as promptly as possible.
Pricing and Availability
Croissant is free to download but requires a subscription for posting to multiple platforms. The subscription is available for a $2.99 month / $19.99 annual / $59.99 lifetime subscription.
Privacy Policy
According to the App Store, the app does not collect any data related to the user. All the personally identifiable data is stored in the Keychain of the user’s device. Therefore, the data is secure. The full privacy policy can be found here.
User Experience
When you first download and start-up Croissant, you are asked to upgrade to Croissant Deluxe. These are the subscription options that are mentioned above. At the bottom of the screen is a ‘skip’ button if you choose not to subscribe. You get the ability to post to multiple accounts and customize app icons as well as support the developer if you subscribe, but it’s not required if you only want to post to one platform at a time.
Once you move past the subscription options, you get to a blank screen where you compose your post. This is really the bread and butter of the app. It’s a minimalist option for creating a social media post that gives you only the basics for posting. You don’t have to hunt for the hashtag, mention, or image options because they are included on this single screen. The settings for the app are very simplistic. You can manage your subscription, change the appearance of the app, contact support, and remove all the accounts. That’s about it. To add accounts, you simply tap on the ‘add account’ at the top of the screen. Once you add one account, you just tap on the account icon to get the option to add another account.
I did find that it was much more enjoyable creating posts using Croissant than using the social platform’s app. I love the distraction-free environment. It’s very easy to set up the account connections and while I do wish that additional platforms were available, I appreciate the focus on the microposting sites.
Conclusion
Croissant is a fresh, minimalist alternative to more complex social media management tools like Buffer and Hootsuite. By focusing on microposting platforms such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads, it meets the needs of small business professionals, artists, and other creatives who prioritize simplicity and affordability. Though it has limitations, Croissant excels at creating a distraction-free environment for content creation and engagement, making it an appealing choice for users wanting to cut through the noise of traditional social platforms.
