Eric McCoy, a veteran in the Huntington Beach Fire Department, has been picked as the city’s new fire chief, city leaders recently announced.
McCoy will lead the department of about 150 sworn personnel with a $62 million annual budget. The department is responsible for responding to fires, medical emergencies and marine safety issues. It responds to more than 21,000 calls for service annually, city officials said.
Most recently, McCoy served as deputy chief of operations and his previous positions include marine safety division chief and public information officer.
McCoy was born and raised in Huntington Beach and became an ocean lifeguard and ambulance operator in 1997, according to a news release. He worked for the Fountain Valley Fire Department for a time and then came back to work for the city in 2006 as a firefighter and paramedic.
McCoy replaces Scott Haberle, who retired from service last year with strong commemorations from city leaders. Haberle had been fire chief since 2020. McCoy had been the acting fire chief since Haberle retired on Dec. 30.
McCoy has degrees from Cal State Long Beach and Columbia Southern University. He is currently enrolled in an executive fire officer program at the National Fire Academy and will graduate in April.
