Car show season doesn’t start for another five to six months, and University High School senior Ivory Rosales is well aware of that.
Rosales and her family, who share a passion for cars, have been to plenty of car shows over the years
Rosales put that love toward a good cause on Saturday by organizing the Classic Car Show in the parking lot of University High School, 6525 W. 18th St, Greeley. The show benefitted the Evans Fire Protection District as part of Rosales’ senior project at University.
“Originally, I thought of doing a different project, but I did some Googling and some research and I found out that firefighters always need supplies,” she said.
She selected the Evans Fire Protection District because her uncle Doug Melby and her great-grandfather DeLon Melby served in the district.
DeSalvo said Rosales reached out in November to introduce herself and her project idea. DeSalvo has been with the fire district for a total of 22 years, nearly three years as chief, and knew her uncle. He was immediately on board.
“It was pretty easy for me to tell her (yes),” he said.
DeSalvo filled the role of mentor for Rosales’ project — one of a number of requirements for the project, which University seniors are required to complete to graduate.
The two met every few weeks, then every week, over the past few months to discuss and plan the show. DeSalvo said he let Rosales call the shots since it was her project, but he was there to offer his support and suggestions when needed.
“This is her project,” he said. “I’m going to let her run with it.”
Rosales put up flyers and made a Facebook event to spread the word. Just before noon, a handful of cars were already on display in the parking lot. There was no registration for the event, as she preferred to rely on word-of-mouth to have people show up with their cars.
Despite the wind, the day was going well, she said, and she learned a lot through the planning process.
“I’ve learned that everybody needs a little bit of notice ahead of time since we did throw this together last minute,” she said. “I’ve learned a lot about what the Evans Fire Department does. He’s (DeSalvo) told me some stories as well.”
Rosales didn’t have a fundraising goal, but what money was raised is set to go toward purchasing smoke detectors and carbon dioxide detectors. DeSalvo said the detectors will be given to Evans community members who need them but might not be able to get them.

Rosales said she would consider putting on the car show again if Saturday’s turned out well in her eyes. If she does it again, it would be during typical car show months, she added.

This week, the nation has been watching, reading and hearing about the historic Los Angeles County Fire, also known as the Palisades Fire. The fire started Tuesday and it has turned into multiple fires. The Palisades Fire has spread to more than 22,000 acres. Media reports indicate the fire has killed at least 10 people, with officials expecting that number to grow.
“It’s heartbreaking,” DeSalvo said of the fires. “It is very heartbreaking.”
To his knowledge, several Weld County fire departments are at the ready to help or offer assistance.
On its Facebook, the Greeley Fire Department announced Saturday morning a brush truck was heading to LA County with a crew of two Greeley firefighters and a third from the Platte Valley Fire Protection District. The crew is expected to assist for at least 14 days.

He said the district has an agreement with other Weld County entities to send personnel if needed.
