Farewell, Jorge Lopez – He’s Signing with the Nationals

By the time the Cubs had added Colin Rea, or even earlier with the Eli Morgan trade or the Cody Poteet acquisition or the Matt Festa claim or the Caleb Thielbar signing or some combination of those plus the many reclamation moves, I had figured a reunion with Jorge Lopez wasn’t happening. As good as he was in the Cubs’ bullpen in the second half, I figured he’d get a big league deal somewhere for a meaningful amount of money. And with all those arms added plus the Cubs REALLY STILL NEEDING to add a surer-fire late-inning guy, I just didn’t see the spot for Lopez. (It was hard enough to see the spot for Rea.)

Anyway, the time has come, and Jorge Lopez is signing with the Washington Nationals:

Nice deal and landing spot for Lopez, who may even get a chance at some saves with the Nationals.

After joining the Cubs – following his rather dramatic fallout with the Mets – Lopez posted a sterling 2.03 ERA over 26.2 innings. He struck out 29.2% of the batters he faced, walked 7.5%, and posted a 59.1% groundball rate, all while looking surprisingly nasty in the process. Obviously his struggles before that small sample with the Cubs – 5.51 career ERA before 2024 – had teams leery about a repeat at age 32, together perhaps with some injury issues that bugged him at the end of the year. Then again, he was really good in 2022, so that’s two out of the last three years that he was quite good. I would’ve been happy about a reunion.

The question is whether I’d have wanted Lopez to be THE FINAL addition to the Cubs’ current bullpen, and that answer is definitely no. If they have only one more slot available (either roster-wise or cash-wise), I’d like to see it go to one of the more consistent late-inning options still available in free agency.
