ALDI’s customer service representatives are looking into a complaint by a shopper.
While it came from one internet user who posted it on social media, his complaint is a common one for shoppers.
X user Bruno de Souza posted his complaint about bag charges on January 7.
BAG CHARGE
Many stores across the country charge for bags as crackdowns on plastic pollution have spread in the last decade.
Aldi, which no longer uses plastic bags in the U.S., offers paper bags for a fee.
Shoppers report that for 12 cents, they can buy paper bags at the store.
Some shoppers may pay even more, as some governments tax paper bag sales.
They could also get reusable bags for higher charges.
While these kinds of charges are not uncommon, Aldi gets extra heat from some customers because shoppers need to deposit 25 cents to be able to use a shopping cart.
They get the 25 cents back at the end, but it can be a confusing process for some.
Bruno, a tourist from Brazil, was not happy with the charges.
“Charging for bags and carts while having overpriced products and rude staff with tourists is unacceptable,” he said in his tweet. “It’s a shame to see such lack of care for customers.”
He added that “change is needed now.”
His post included the hashtag #empathymatters and tagged Aldi.
Aldi responded to the post two days later.
“Can you please take a few minutes to share the details of your experience with our team?” a customer service rep asked.
“We’d truly appreciate the opportunity to have this addressed!”
The company sent a link to a contact form where he could input more details.
It’s not clear if Bruno ever filled it out.
BAG BONANZA
As bag charges and bans have spread to more parts of the country, some have struggled to adjust.
One state is getting ready for a new bag ban, stricter than its previous one.
California was among the first jurisdictions in the US to ban plastic bags in 2014, but stores were allowed to sell re-usable bags made of a thicker plastic.
However, many began throwing these away, too. As a result, the state known for its ambitious regulations got stricter, banning the reusable plastic bags effective January 2026.
Other bag bans and fees came from municipal governments — like a fee imposed in a Philly suburb.
One Walmart shopper said they left their $300 cart of goods behind over a Maryland municipal bag ban.
