Quinn Ewers and the Longhorn offense were looking at a 4th-and-goal situation with the season effectively on the line. Texas needed a touchdown to tie things at 21-all and try to force overtime, but Sawyer had other plans.
He came around the edge and blasted Ewers, his former roommate at Ohio State, with a strip sack. That was just the start of the play as Sawyer scooped up the fumble and rumbled 83 yards for the legendary moment.
Immediately after the game, Sawyer was asked if he had a chance to find Ewers on the field. The OSU defender admitted he did, and he shared Ewers’ message.
“Yeah, I did,” said Sawyer about getting to speak to Ewers after the game. “As I was walking off, he said ‘Screw you’ and I started laughing. That’s my boy and obviously we were roommates when he was here. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and this Texas team, I mean that’s a great team. It took us 4 quarters, and they had a great season, so shout out to them too.”
It’s a bitter end for Ewers and Steve Sarkisian with all signs currently pointing to Ewers leaving for the 2025 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, Sawyer will get his chance to return a national championship to his home state program in a national championship game matchup vs. Notre Dame.
