On a snowy night in Detroit, the Blackhawks were looking to carry over momentum from a big win against a good Colorado team. So… when it took only 4:26 for Patrick Kane to set up Alex DeBrincat for the game’s first goal… yeah. It wasn’t played very well by the tandem of TJ Brodie and Alex Vlasic; DeBrincat was all by himself. But you know what’s fun? When Connor Bedard makes a terrific play to set up a tying goal six and a half minutes later. The game was tied after 20 minutes.
With Bedard in the box to start the second period, Vlasic failed to clear a puck and Detroit took advantage. Lucas Raymond scored a power play goal to give Detroit the lead once again. The Blackhawks never came out of the room offensively in the second period. High danger chances were 8-1 for Detroit. Shot attempts? 27-2 favoring the Wings. It was as one-sided as any period the Blackhawks have played all year… but they only trailed by one after 40 minutes.
Andrew Copp hammered a shot thru to extend the lead in the third period as the Blackhawks’ offense remained MIA. The Red Wings quickly scored another time and the flood gates appeared to be open. Teuvo Teräväinen was able to get the Blackhawks a second goal late… after the lead felt too big for a comeback. The Blackhawks pulled their goalie down two with 3:50 left in regulation and… Teräväinen scored again! Suddenly we had a game on our hands. But an empty net goal was the final nail in the Blackhawks’ coffin tonight. So much for game-to-game momentum.
Star 1: Petr Mrázek
Mrázek was marvelous against Colorado and got some good help from his skaters defensively and some offense. The guys in front of him struggled a lot tonight, especially in a massively lopsided second period (shots were officially 17-2 favoring Detroit). But Mrázek kept the game close. He deserved better tonight.
Star 2: Connor Bedard
Bedard’s assist in the first period extended his point streak to nine games, tied for the second-longest streak by a teenager in Blackhawks history (with Eddie Olczyk, one behind Jonathan Toews’ club mark). It also happened to move him past Kane for the second-most assists by a teenager in Blackhawks history. Bedard made a really good, smart, strong play to keep Dylan Larkin off the puck to start a breakout that turned into the Blackhawks’ third goal.
What a pass by Connor Bedard, whose 9-game point streak is the longest active streak in the NHL. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/2PHXePZ1rT

Teräväinen hadn’t scored since Dec. 15 (nine games) but scored twice in the third period to make things interesting.

Four of the Blackhawks’ six defensemen had at least one giveaway thru two periods. You know who didn’t have one? Nolan Allan, who also led the blue line with three hits and two blocked shots. Allan made a gorgeous pass to Teräväinen for the Blackhawks’ second goal. Colton Dach had the second assist on the Teräväinen goal, giving him a point in back-to-back games. His point streak is now seven behind Bedard’s. Ryan Donato was credited with four of the Blackhawks’ seven shots on goal in the first two periods. Yes, the Blackhawks had seven shots on goal thru 40 minutes. Donato hadn’t scored since Dec. 17 (eight games). Another physical night for Jason Dickinson. He was credited with two blocked shots, two hits and won 5 of 11 faceoffs thru two periods. Blackhawks not-named-Dickinson won 6 of 17 at the dot thru two periods. Frank Nazar (2-2) was good again in the faceoff circle in the first period after a strong night against the Avs. He and Bedard were two of the Blackhawks’ top three forwards in shot attempts and shots on goal percentage at 5-on-5 (according to Natural Stat Trick). Thru two periods, Nazar was tied for the team high at 0.43 expected Goals For. The Blackhawks killed one full penalty and 15 seconds of a second in the first period — and only allowed four shots on goal in 20 minutes. Chicago was only credited with five shots on net in the opening period. This was not a good night for Alex Vlasic. Uncharacteristically mediocre. Philipp Kurashev half-assed an attempt at the puck in the neutral zone and then “played” photographer-caliber defense on Detroit’s third goal… I wouldn’t be shocked if he wound up on waivers soon. He’s totally lost.Want to see a comical lack of effort from Philipp Kurashev? pic.twitter.com/ljILdXpUUi
