The Griffins, who are No. 3 in the Orange County Top 25, is 4-0 in league and 11-6 overall. No. 10 Corona del Mar is 3-1 in league, 17-3 overall.
Gray, a senior guard, made four 3-pointers, with three of them coming in the third quarter. Senior guards Samori Guyness and Wes Trevino scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Los Alamitos.
Corona del Mar sophomore guard Maxwell Scott scored 21 points. Junior guard Oliver Nakara scored 18 points with four 3-pointers, three of those coming in the first quarter.
Sea Kings senior forward Jackson Harlan, who is an All-Orange County water polo player, scored 16 points with a game-high 11 rebounds in the fast-paced game.
The Sea Kings broke out to an 18-8 lead. Los Alamitos quickly closed the deficit. Guyness made a 3-pointer to beat the end-of-the-quarter buzzer, enabling the Griffins to take a 24-22 lead into the second quarter.
Corona del Mar had a 37-36 lead at halftime.
The teams traded the lead through most of the third quarter. Gray scored 11 points in the quarter including a buzzer-beating 3 that sent the Griffins into the fourth quarter with a 57-53 lead.
Los Alamitos surged to a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter with Gray and Jordan Taylor making 3-pointers. The Sea Kings rallied. A 3-pointer by Scott trimmed the Griffins lead to 71-67 with 1:24 to go but that was as close as Corona del Mar would get from there.
“It was a very good team win,” Gray said. “An electric atmosphere. It’s great to get a ‘W’ in league.”
Griffins coach Nathan Berger was not concerned when Los Alamitos fell behind by 10 points early Wednesday.
“We play a pretty frenetic style,” Berger said. “A 10-point (deficit) feels more like four or five to us. It’s more just sticking to the game plan.
“We have depth. The sixth, seventh player on our depth chart are really good basketball players.”
Corona del Mar’s three losses are by a combined seven points.
