Kevin Warren Continues to Insist the Bears Will Break Ground on a New Stadium in 2025

The 2025 calendar year figures to be a big one for the Chicago Bears. This team is set to hire a new head coach, deploy its ample cap space to improve its roster via free agency, and use its draft capital to bolster the squad with premium picks. And if President Kevin Warren gets his wish, this franchise will also be breaking ground on a new stadium.

“I remain steadfast that the goal remains that we have shovels in the ground in 2025,” Warren told reporters at Halas Hall on Tuesday. “and I’m confident that will happen.”

Kevin Warren has been on the job for 20 months. But since taking over for Ted Phillips as the team’s president, there hasn’t been much in terms of visible process when it comes to the Bears’ stadium deal. Sure, Warren reiterates that a downtown stadium at the Museum Campus remains the focus. And Warren insists that the team is making progress. However, it is hard to align with that point of view when there isn’t much more than renderings to look at when it comes to the stadium project.

I am not surprised that we are in January 2025 without a more concrete idea of a timeline for the Chicago Bears stadium project. And it has very little to do with my skepticism which is rooted in years of studying Chicago and Illinois politics or years following a Bears team that makes seemingly everything about the fan experience feel like a tedious taffy pull. Instead, my belief that the Bears were going to slow-play this thing comes from the lack of a deadline that would put pressure on anyone to cut a deal.

As far as I am concerned, the first big milestone date will come in 2026 — which is when the Bears can break their lease with the city of Chicago and Soldier Field for $84 million. With that in mind, this makes 2025 a real spit-or-get-off-the-pot year. And since we’re still just one week into the new year, it feels like a good time to remember that we still have so much to experience before 2025 expires and the calendar flips to 2026.

Other notable quotes from the Bears president’s press conference:

So … when will we start seeing some progress on the stadium front? I thought this quote was telling: “As we get into the spring and summer, you’ll start seeing some of this progress that I’m talking about now. I feel the momentum is really moving in the right direction and from a stadium standpoint, we’re right exactly where I thought we would be.” The spring and summer months are the slowest on the NFL calendar. It is also in those months when we tend to get the most stadium watch updates. I doubt that is a coincidence and I fully expect more of the same in 2025. On Arlington Heights: “We own 326 acres of beautiful land in Arlington Heights. It’s a fantastic piece of property. We were able to get the memorandum of understanding done there. So, optionality does exist.” This seems like a fancy way of calling Arlington Heights a backup plan if things don’t get done in the city. Considering the challenges and hurdles that come with building downtown along the lakefront, it doesn’t take much to imagine the Bears opting to build on the plot of land that used to be Arlington Park. On Ryan Poles: “I trust him. He’s a hard worker. He’s young. He’s talented. He’s curious. I think his greatest attribute, he’s willing, as he did just in the press conference, to raise his hand and say here’s some things where he fell short. … Again, I trust Ryan. I trust the process that he has put together. I’m confident it will yield positive results.” We’ll soon find out if Warren put his trust in the right person to lead this regime change. On what he learned from being around other coaching searches: “The thing I learned in Minnesota is to make sure you go into this process with clean hands, clean eyes, no decisions, and make sure you set the standard. Then once it becomes clear that the person meets that standard, start to zero in, and once you make a determination you have to go forward. You can’t look back.” This just seems like good decision-making advice that can be applicable in any situation.
