Pete Carroll will soon get an opportunity to make his pitch to become the next Chicago Bears head coach.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano tweets that the Bears are set to interview Carroll on Thursday:
Bears plan to interview former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll for their vacant head coach job Thursday, sources tell me and @JFowlerESPN
— Dan Graziano (@DanGrazianoESPN) January 8, 2025What a wild few weeks it has been. You would not have put Pete Carroll on a list of Chicago Bears head coach candidates three weeks ago. But that changed on Christmas Day when it was reported that Carroll had an interest in coaching the team. One day later, we got our first report about the team’s interest in discussing the vacancy with Carroll. The NFL moves so fast and unexpectedly sometimes. But even I couldn’t have seen mutual interest between the Carroll and Chicago’s football team coming.
Pete Carroll will get a chance to make his pitch to the Bears
Even at age 73, Pete Carroll is one of the most interesting head coach candidates out there interviewing for jobs. Carroll is a Super Bowl-winning head coach who had a lengthy run of success at the college level coaching the USC Trojans and in the pros with the Seattle Seahawks. A proven winner who has won at the pro level with quarterbacks like Russell Wilson and Geno Smith, it is hard to not be interested in what Carroll has to say. Even if the Bears don’t hire him, they should be willing to hear him out and take notes. Who knows … perhaps the franchise can learn a thing or two about being run properly in the modern era.
I think what gives Bears fans pause here is the fear of a repeat of the John Fox era. The fear of hiring a coach who will treat this job like a golden parachute is understandable. I suppose that is a risk if you were to hire a coach in his twilight years. But Pete Carroll and John Fox are two very different coaches with contrasting styles and personalities. Carroll and Fox aren’t a one-for-one comp for each other, which is something we should keep in mind.
In the end, I wish I could be a fly on the wall for this interview. Pete Carroll could hit the Bears with some cold, hard truths. And I would love to be a witness to that conversation.
