The Cincinnati Reds dropped a surprise trade on everyone tonight, acquiring on-the-block utility man Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers for a healthy price:
Full trade, per ESPN sources:Cincinnati receives infielder Gavin Lux.Los Angeles Dodgers receive a Competitive Balance Round A pick (around No. 37) and outfield prospect Mike Sirota.
The Competitive Balance pick, which is gifted to smaller market teams under the CBA, comes just after the first round. Nice get for the Dodgers, who seem to use picks in that range very wisely. And Mike Sirota was the Reds’ third round pick this past season, though he had at one time been considered a possible first round pick.
Lux, 27, is a former tip-top prospect who hasn’t quite found his footing in the big leagues, at least not to the degree of his prospect status. That said, he’s possibly turned a bit of a corner the last couple seasons, hitting .263/.333/.391/106 wRC+. He also comes with two years of team control.
What I don’t like about this deal is it feels like Lux is ever so close to picking it up with the bat, and I don’t much want to see him do it with the Reds.
What’ll take a moment to understand about this deal is that the Reds seemed to have a sufficient overload of infield options that they sent Jonathan India to the Royals for Brady Singer in a roster/salary swap. And now they’re trading to acquire another infielder?
Could just be that the Reds felt their overall positional group needed a boost, and they really liked Lux as a super-utility option (yes, he can play shortstop in addition to all the outfield spots, if necessary – not sure how good he is). With Jeimer Candelario and Santiago Espinal coming off down years, Noelvi Marte having missed half a season with a PED suspension, and Matt McLain dealing with the shoulder injury, maybe it’s a pretty simple explanation. The Reds have a ton of young pitching coming, but less so on the positional side. If you think Gavin Lux’s bat might break out, just go get him and deal with the positional stuff later.
Is it a wise move for the Reds overall, given their roster? Eh, I could see it both ways. And if they believe the NL Central is wide open right now, and believe their young pitching will really step forward, then maybe it’s worth giving up a lot of draft-related talent for two years of Lux.
