The NFC’s path to the Super Bowl will run through the Motor City.
The Detroit Lions completed a historic season with a 31-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night to clinch the NFC North and the top seed in the conference.
At 15-2, the Lions tied the Kansas City Chiefs for the best record in the league and earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The Vikings dropped to 14-3 and will travel to Los Angeles to face the Rams in the wild-card round.
Jahmyr Gibbs scored four touchdowns for the Lions, who pulled away after a quiet first half that ended with Detroit up 10-6. The Lions’ banged-up defence also stepped up in a big way, stopping the Vikings multiple times in the red zone on the way to victory.
The Lions, who set a franchise record for wins this season, are looking to improve on last season’s result when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game. The team has never played in the Super Bowl.
The Vikings are in the playoffs for the second time in the last five seasons.
