Father Joe’s Villages, San Diego’s largest organization addressing homelessness in the region, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2025.
Once known as the St. Vincent de Paul Center, Father Joe’s Villages has helped tens of thousands of individuals and families transition away from life on the streets and into permanent homes.
The organization is set to mark several milestones this year:
Opened a 248-bed sober shelter on Wednesday. Opening a 44-bed detox center at the Paul Mirabile Center in April. Expanding support for seniors with a new shelter, sharing space with Veterans Village San Diego. Will provide case management services to help clients access benefits like disability or social security. Launching prevention programs to provide assistance and alternatives for those at risk of homelessness. Developing two new affordable housing communities, in San Diego and Oceanside, through the Turning the Key program. The organization’s programs began under the late Father Joe Carroll, who died in 2021, following a then-revolutionary approach: listening to the needs of people experiencing homelessness.
Myriad issues have contributed to the ongoing homeless crisis, including the rising costs of housing in the region and the prevalence of dangerous drugs, such as fentanyl.
“We continue to be inspired by the example of all who came before us, especially Father Joe Carroll, who supported our neighbors through embodying compassion, respect, empathy, empowerment and dignity. This is the example we follow each and every day,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, CEO of Father Joe’s Villages.
