REPORT: Kliff Kingsbury Expected to Interview For Bears Head Coach Gig

The Kliff Kingsbury connection with Caleb Williams put him at the forefront of the Chicago Bears’ search for an offensive coordinator last year. Since then, the Bears have fired the offensive coordinator they chose instead of Kingsbury and the head coach who hired him. And, perhaps soon, Kingsbury will interview for the Bears’ vacant head-coaching position.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shares his expectation that Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will interview for the Chicago Bears’ head coach opening. When asked if the Bears would show interest in Kingsbury after hiring Shane Waldron instead of him last offseason, this is what the NFL insider had to say in the latest roundup of chatter revolving around NFL head coach rumors:

I expect Kingsbury to interview there. As was told to me, most or all the names that have been linked to the Bears are people Chicago would like to interview. Observers believe experience will be a key factor in the hiring process, and Kingsbury has experience coupled with quarterback cachet.

Now, we’ve heard the buzz word “selective” with Johnson’s approach to the cycle. Kingsbury will also be selective, I’m told. He’s still getting paid head coach money from Arizona and gets to coach Daniels on a Washington team that should be even better next season. I don’t think he’s ironing shirts for job interviews just yet. Keep in mind, Kingsbury was down the road with the Jets in 2019 before he took the Arizona job, so New York could double back with him.

There are a few nuggets to take away from Jeremy Fowler’s insight above.

Firstly, the idea that “observers believe experience will be a key factor” in the Bears’ process. The last two head coach hires in Chicago have arrived with no previous head coaching experience. Perhaps the powers that be at Halas Hall are preparing to turn to someone who has done the job before. Maybe the takeaway here is that the team might prioritize experience as part of whatever formula it considers in ranking its head coach candidates. Hence, the Kliff Kingsbury connection. I don’t think experience is the only thing that should factor into the process. But based on recent results, maybe it is something the Bears should consider more than it had in the past.

The other noteworthy piece here is that Kliff Kingsbury might be as selective as Ben Johnson was when he was considering taking a head coach job last offseason.

I did not realize that Kingsbury was still getting paid from his contract with the Arizona Cardinals. So it’s not as if the pay bump and cash grab is a driving force. Plus, as Fowler points out, there should be no rush to get a new job when his fallback option is coaching presumptive NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels. There is a lot to consider here. And yet, there is still a belief that Kingsbury and the Bears will link up and discuss the job opening at Halas Hall this offseason.

Should the Bears give Kliff Kingsbury a deeper look?

For what it’s worth, Kliff Kingsbury has ample experience as a head coach — both in college and in the pros. And that might work in his favor. Things didn’t end well for Kliff in Arizona. But he did have one playoff season (an 11-win campaign in 2021) and took the Cardinals from a 5-win team in 2019 to an 8-win squad in 2020 before topping out at 11 wins in 2021. NFL history is littered with coaches who learn from their shortcomings at one job and apply what they’ve learned to succeed at another. It isn’t out of the realm of possibilities that Kingsbury could be that type of coach.

Kliff Kingsbury recently discussed what he learned from his first NFL head coaching gig and what he is taking away from coaching under Dan Quinn in Washington:

I don’t think I set the foundation the way I would do it after watching DQ and how he set the foundation from Day 1. And it was these are the standards, and this what we won’t compromise, and this is what we’re going to be. I definitely could have done a better job of that. And once you don’t lay it out like that it’s hard to put it back in, it’s hard to reset it. I think that where he’s done such a great job of saying this is what we’re going to be from Day 1 and there are no ifs, ands, or buts, and the guys brought in.

I love that answer from Kliff Kingsbury so much. For far too long, the Chicago Bears have had coaches who stubbornly get stuck in their ways and refuse to learn from their past mistakes. Heck, it was Matt Eberflus’ constant doubling-down on what were clear missteps that ultimately led to his demise and dismissal as Bears head coach.

In the end, I feel as if the Bears should give Kingsbury a closer look. Beyond the obvious connection to quarterback Caleb Williams and his success as an offensive coordinator with the Commaners, Kliff Kingsbury comes off as someone who has learned from their past and is ready to apply what they have learned to a new situation. That type of motivating factor makes him an interesting candidate for the Bears head coach vacancy.,
