Nigel Farage has claimed his friend and potential financial backer Elon Musk‘s calls for the release of convicted prisoner Tommy Robinson will not damage Reform UK’s election ambitions.
The Tesla and X boss attracted criticism earlier this week for inaccurately claiming that Robinson was in “solitary confinement in prison” for “telling the truth” – and calling for him to be freed.
Asked if Musk’s support for Robinson would damage Reform’s chances in future elections, Farage said: “No, we are a party. Robinson has his own show. We can all have different points of view.
“I’m busy with a booming membership, sold out events and campaigns. Not gossip.”
And when asked if he disagreed with Musk’s backing for the early release of Robinson and his promotion of a controversial documentary from the far right activist, Farage said: “I have a very long history of not wanting the multiple time convicted Robinson involved in my political ventures. Everyone can have their own view.
“We all have different points of view. The Robinson stuff is irrelevant.”
Farage would not say whether he had spoken to the world’s wealthiest man about his support for Robinson or to request that he withdraws his backing for the former English Defence League leader.
It comes following reports that right wing politicians from the Conservatives and Reform UK have privately urged Donald Trump’s allies to distance themselves from Robinson, warning it was a step too far.
Musk has become a close ally of the president-elect and has been given a position in his administration.
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, was jailed for 18 months last October after admitting he committed contempt of court by repeating false allegations against a Syrian refugee in breach of an injunction.

Later on Thursday, Musk also recommended that his 210 million followers watch Robinson’s banned documentary Silenced, which centred on an incident in 2018 involving Syrian refugee Jamal Hijazi, 17.
from Musk, in which he said “watch this to understand more”, has been viewed by more than two million people so far.
Referring to calls from himself and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch this week for a national inquiry into grooming gangs, Farage added: “My American friends cannot believe the mass underage rape horror or the cover up around it”.
Earlier this week, Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips rejected Oldham Council’s request for a Government-led inquiry into historical child sexual exploitation, claiming that it should be led by the council instead.
Musk also turned on Phillips on X, claiming she “deserves to be in prison” following her decision.
