The heat is on in quest for greener homes

The Government is already driving through plans for a new generation of on-shore wind and solar farms that are much bigger than anything this country has seen so far, as it looks to make our energy system virtually net zero within just five years.

Now, it wants households to participate in that drive to net zero by making their heating supply greener – primarily by replacing gas boilers with heat pumps. With news that the Government plans for all homes to end up being warmed by a heat pump – rather than a gas boiler or another green alternative – the biggest question on consumers’ lips will be costs.

Heat pumps take heat from the air outside the building, bringing it inside and amplifying it to the required temperature – using the same technology as an air conditioner but in reverse.

Because most of the heat is transferred rather than generated, they are as much as three to five times more efficient than conventional heating technologies like gas central heating.

But they are considerably more expensive than gas boilers, usually costing around £5,500 to buy and install even after applying a £7,500 government grant. As a result, only 1 per cent of homes in the UK are primarily heated by a heat pump.

But that looks set to change. After this year, gas boilers will be banned in new homes with almost all having a heat pump installed instead.

And from 2035, it is due be illegal to buy a new gas boiler regardless of the age of your home – but the Government has said it would not force anyone to rip out a working boiler and the hard deadline may yet change.

With a stampede of interest expected – and a gas boiler shelf life of around 10 years – now may be the time to consider a heat pump.
