The highlight of which was the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, California beginning at 5 pm ET.

The No. 1 team in the country Oregon faced Big Ten rivals Ohio State in the clash of national championship contenders.

ESPN also broadcast their College GameDay show live from the iconic Rose Bowl stadium on New Year’s Day.

Pat McAfee, Nick Saban, Kirk Herbstreit and the team were on air from 10 am ET to 1 pm ET to build up to the games.

The first contest of New Year’s Day at 1 pm ET saw Texas take on Arizona State in the Peach Bowl.

Arizona State mounted a dramatic late fightback in Atlanta, Georgia.

And their comeback forced the game into overtime.

That played havoc with ESPN’s plans to switch to the Rose Bowl at 5 pm ET.

Bosses decided to start the Rose Bowl broadcast on ESPN2 while the overtime drama played out in the Peach Bowl.

Texas held off the comeback from Arizona State to win 39-31 in a double-overtime thriller on ESPN.

The channel then picked up Rose Bowl coverage during the first quarter.

The game was supposed to be one of the most competitive and closely-fought of the CFP so far.

But Ohio State rushed out to an early 34-0 lead to stun the Oregon Ducks.

They held on to win 41-21 and book their place in the semifinals next week.

Texas will face Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl Classic on January 10.

    How the 12-team CFP works

The first ever 12-team College Football Playoff kicks off on Friday, December 20.

    But who will get in?

The highest four ranked conference champions will all be guaranteed a first-round bye into the quarterfinals around New Year.

The fifth highest ranked conference champion will also be assured a place, regardless of if they’re ranked in the top 12 teams in the nation.

That ensures a champion from one of the second tier of conferences will get a chance to play for the national championship.

Teams seeded five through eight will host a first round playoff game on Friday, 20 or Saturday 21 December.

And they will go up against the teams seeded nine through 12.

All of these rankings and seedings are decided by the CFP committee – based on record and strength of schedule among other factors.

This year’s National Championship Game will take place on Monday, January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

One quarterfinal is still to be played after a terror attack in New Orleans forced it to be postponed.

The Sugar Bowl was initially set to be played at 8.45 pm ET on January 1.

But it was moved to January 2 at 4 pm ET after a deadly incident in the city.

A driver rammed a truck into crowds in the early hours of New Year’s Day and killed at least 15 people.

The Superdome was put into lockdown ahead of the Sugar Bowl before the game was called off.
