Investigators said the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded Wednesday morning outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, killing the person inside the vehicle, was rented in Colorado through the car rental app Turo.
Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill did not say where or when in Colorado the 2024 Cybertruck was rented, but investigators tracked it via charging stations from Colorado to Las Vegas.
“We were able to trace that truck through the Tesla charging stations and it arrived here in Las Vegas around 7:30,” McMahill said Wednesday during a news conference. The explosion occurred about 70 minutes later.
He said they know the name of the person who rented the truck, but did not give any information about the person who died inside the truck or if it was the same person. McMahill said his office would release more information after speaking with the next of kin.
ABC News reported the FBI is conducting operations in Colorado Springs in relation to the explosion.
Seven people were injured in the explosion, but all have been released from the hospital.
