There are fears of mass casualties after a vehicle struck a crowd in New Orleans’ popular French Quarter, US media reports.
Witnesses told CBS News that a truck ploughed into those gathered on Bourbon Street during the early hours of New Year’s Day.
The driver is then reported to have left the vehicle and exchanged fire with police.
One of CBS News’s reporters saw multiple people being treated on the ground for injuries.
A New Orleans Police Department spokesperson told the outlet “initial reports show a car may have plowed into a group of people. Injuries are unknown but there are reported fatalities.”
Nola Ready – the City of New Orleans department responsible for emergency preparedness – warned residents to avoid the area of Canal and Bourbon streets.
“There has been a mass casualty incident on Canal and Bourbon Street. Get yourself away from the area,” Ready said in a post on X.
